Eames Aluminum Group Lounge Chair for Herman Miller

Description

Vintage swivel and tilt lounge chair – part of the Aluminum Group Series for Herman Miller by Charles and Ray Eames. The chair is upholstered with a soft teal colored breathable fabric (almost velvet-like) that is slightly worn in places and has a small hole on the upper headrest edge in the back (like pinhead hole size). There is also the equivalent to a fabric scratch on the seat bottom edge. Otherwise, after cleaning, the upholstery looks in pretty good shape.

The frame shows what i initially thought was some oxidation and pitting especially at the edges. I also thought that this was perhaps actual physical abrasions rather than chemical to the aluminum. And, i was right, partially. It turns out most of these abrasions are physical, but only as deep as the lacquer coating of the chair aluminum. [The more you know… (N…B…*….).] While not my forte, it is a fairly approachable repair, but it remains, as is, for the time being.

The chair is offered, as is, with those facts reflected in the price. In fact, the price reflects my more dire, earlier assessment of the chair, so I think it’s a good price for this item now.

The chair swivels and tilts like a dream still and is in good shape overall. This chair, and the Eames Aluminum Group line, generally, are some of the lightest, most well designed and constructed furniture of their caliber ever made. Herman Miller stickers in place on the chair underside. Truly a mid century classic.
